The primary responsibility of the Committee on Art in Public Spaces (CAPS) is to advise the president about the acquisition of works of art exhibited in Yale’s public spaces (public are), separate from the art on view at the University’s museums, libraries, and schools. CAPS makes recommendations regarding the inventory and condition of such art, and ways in which the university can make the art more accessible to campus residents and visitors, including tours and websites. The committee welcomes the views of members of the university art appearing in Yale’s public spaces.
Committee members include representatives from the University’s faculty, Office of Facilities, administration, residential colleges, and collecting institutions. Given this wide expertise, the committee is also uniquely qualified to provide guidance and to serve as a resource for all members of the campus community in matters relating to public art. The committee invites inquiry from all campus constituencies considering the acquisition or exhibition, including temporary installation, of public art. Please consult CAPS’ “Guidelines and Procedures” to learn more about the committee’s scope, procedures, and guidance on how to submit a proposal for a work of public art.
